12/31: With a glut of closers available on the trade and free agent markets this winter, it comes as no surprise to see the Angels ink Brian Fuentes to replace the departed Francisco Rodriguez. The Angels were apparently wise to wait, as they minimized their risk by going just two years on Fuentes, with an eye towards handing the job to Jose Arredondo sometime between now and the 2011 season. Arredondo certainly has the stuff for the job, and in his first big league season, he was brilliant, going 10-2 with a 1.62 ERA and 55:22 K:BB in 61 innings, but concerns over his readiness for the job led to Fuentes. Fuentes saved 30 games for the Rockies last season to go with a 2.73 ERA and excellent 82:22 K:BB in 62.2 innings. He took over as closer in late-April after Manny Corpas lost the job and Fuentes never looked back, even making the All-Star team. Fuentes should again give the Angels one of the AL’s deepest bullpens along with Scot Shields (2.70 ERA), Darren Oliver (2.88 ERA) and rookie Kevin Jepsen (63 strikeouts in 63 innings between the minors and big leagues). You may recall Fuentes’ famous consecutive four-game meltdown in 2007 (four appearances, four blown saves, four losses) and subsequent 6.52 post-season ERA, but he should be one of the league’s more-productive closers in 2008, even if his team doesn’t give him 69 save opportunities a la Rodriguez.
